Abstract
An attempt was made to assess the effect of grazing by Onychiurus subtenuis Folsom on nutrient release from and respiration of a sterile dark fungus using simple microcosms held under controlled laboratory conditions. The results showed that the fungus was very efficient in taking up all available soluble NO3− and PO42− and that collembolan grazing had no effects in releasing these nutrients during the 10 day experiment. Significant increase in respiration of litter colonized by the fungus was observed following collembolan grazing, but this increase was attributed to the activity of bacteria and fungi tracked into the leaf litter systems by the Collembola.
